With heavy hearts we regret to announce the passing of David Maxwell Glover. David passed peacefully at his home in Vancouver in the arms of his loving wife Michelle, on February 23, 2026, after a long illness. He was 85 years old.

Born in 1940 on Braggs Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, David spent his early years there before moving with his parents to Corner Brook. He later attended Memorial University in St. John’s, where he began a lifelong love of literature and learning. He became an English teacher and inspired students for many years in schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

David married Patricia Lewis and together they settled in Placentia, where they welcomed their two sons, Matthew in 1971 and Daniel in 1977. He later completed his Masters of Philosophy and continued teaching with dedication and quiet passion. He became a published author and actor appearing in many plays and television productions, including Tales from Pigeon Inlet. After Patricia’s tragic death in 1979, David carried on teaching while raising his boys with steady love and strength.

David married Michelle in 1987, and together they built a life filled with adventure and shared purpose. After taking early retirement from Laval High School, David and Michelle began twenty-four remarkable years abroad as Michelle taught in primary and international schools. They made their homes in Japan, New Zealand, England, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Croatia, and Vietnam, where Matthew and Daniel made frequent visits, sharing in their adventures.

Those years were filled with exploration and joy. David delighted in working in rice fields and on farms, climbing the White Island volcano, walking his beloved dog along the English coastline, enjoying grilled fish by the Bosphorus and Black Sea, exploring the pyramids of Egypt, taking weekly felucca rides down the Nile, climbing Mount Sinai, going on safari in Tanzania, delighting in wine tours in South Africa, wandering through ancient Greek ruins and swimming in the Adriatic and Thai Seas. Above all, he loved being near the water and experiencing the richness of different cultures alongside Michelle.

When his health began to decline, David and Michelle returned to Canada and settled for three peaceful years in Nelson, British Columbia. He cherished long walks by the lake and the clear mountain air. After the heartbreaking loss of his son Matthew in 2022, David and Michelle moved to Vancouver, B.C., where they spent the past four years. He especially loved walking along Kitsilano and Jericho beaches and watching the sunsets. David received exceptional medical care and support.

The family is deeply grateful to the many physicians and medical teams who cared for David, including his family physician Dr. Nedd, the many cardiologists including Dr. Roston, Dr. Bennett and Dr. Wong at Vancouver General Hospital, the Hospital at Home team of Dr. Tram, Dr. Sohi, and Dr. Berger, the palliative care team of Dr. Valoo, nurses Nina and Johnson, night nurses Karen, Perry, and Aman, day nurse Stacey, and dedicated community support workers who made it possible for David’s final wish to be fulfilled. He was able to spend his last days at home, surrounded by love.

Heartfelt thanks are also extended to Father Alfredo Ramos and Father Leo English of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish for their prayers and comfort, and to the OLPH school staff and students for their compassion and support during David’s illness and passing.

David was predeceased by his parents Watson and Evelyn, sister Patricia, brother Fred, his first wife Patricia, beloved son Matthew, and members of the Glover, Lewis, and O’Keefe families.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of thirty nine years, Michelle (O'Keefe), his son Daniel, grandchildren Miles and Trisha, brother Jack, many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

In keeping with David’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no visitation. His ashes will be returned to Newfoundland and Labrador this summer for burial.

“So you should view this fleeting world:
A star at dawn,
A bubble in a stream,
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp,
A phantom, and a dream.”

So sorry to hear of Mr. Glover’s passing. I was one of his students at Laval in the early 90s and I was lucky enough to have him as an English teacher twice. English wasn’t my favourite course but I loved it once I hit his classroom, and I still love to read. He was a great teacher and I thank him for the role he played in my love of literature. I had always wished to have had the chance to see him again and let him know that and to also let him know that I’m now a teacher. Though I teach to the opposite side of the brain, I teach mathematics. My thoughts and prayers to Michelle and Danny and all his family and friends.

So sad to hear of Mr.Glover’s passing.
A man of great talent, intellect and wit.
I call on things he taught me in politics, language and culture. Pride in art and heritage was my take away from being his student. I will carry that always.

My condolences on the passing of Mr. Glover. He was definitely one of my favourite teachers, and a man who could tell stories that when you closed your eyes, what he was saying could play out in your mind like a movie.
